I know many people go searching for the best vanilla slice around Australia and so this may be a controversial claim… but I think I have found it! Every time I go to the Mornington Peninsula I simply have to visit The Peninsula Pantry. It is a small bakery in the inland backstreets of Rye that you would never find unless you were told about it. It is quite a small little place so it can get busy on the weekends and it is best to go in a small group or just get takeaway. The first time we went, we did actually try their other food as well and the rest of their menu was equally as impressive as their famous vanilla slice. They have a small breakfast and lunch menu and then a cabinet full of sweet and savoury treats. They make homemade pies and quiches, salads, jam donuts, chocolate eclairs and cheesecakes. Everything is made on site except for the Lie Vito artisan breads. They try to source many of their ingredients locally and use butter instead of margarine and free range eggs which we like to see.

Peninsula Pantry bake fresh fruit muffins everyday and when we stopped in the flavour of the day was Rhubarb and Custard. The muffins were deliciously crunchy on the top with a soft pillowy inside, layered with rich custard and fruit. I wonder if this is the custard they use in the vanilla slice? Either way, you can’t go wrong.

We also tried their Beetroot Brekky: a generous serve of smooth danish feta, poached eggs, smashed avocado, tomato and beetroot relish. I personally love a bit of beetroot with many things and the relish went especially well with eggs.

To takeaway we had to try their almond croissants. The croissant was buttery rich and flaky and the almond frangipane mix was very nutty and not too sweet.

Now you cannot visit without trying their vanilla slice. The custard is sandwiched by two thick layers of flaky pastry, handmade by their pastry chef. A generous dusting of icing sugar on the top ensures you get a good dose of sweetness and messy while doing it. Now probably the thing that makes it so divine is the deliciously rich custard that is smooth and creamy and is very moreish. The vanilla slice are $4.50 and are quite a large serving, but don’t try and share as you will regret it! I have also heard that they create birthday cake size vanilla slices… I know what I want for my birthday next year!

So this is the best vanilla slice that I have had in a long time… where’s the best one you have had?
