Via Battisti Mt Martha (2 of 5)

I was down at the Mornington Peninsula again recently and after our customary dip in the hot springs and vanilla slice we stumbled across a lovely little cafe on the foreshore of the small main street of Mt Martha. Mt Martha is about a 10minute drive from Mornington and so a bit closer to Melbourne then some of the towns lower on the peninsula such as Rye and Sorrento. I visited Via Battisti a few times and it was always busy, regardless of the day or weather, which is often a good sign. The locals obviously know where to get the best coffee and lunch. It has a cute little grocery wall stocking gourmet produce and a nice atmosphere to eat in with small bench tables and stools.

They do great coffee which has a savoury flavour and a bit of texture to it.  They used nice quality soymilk – bonsoy and made a great chai latte. The barista prefers to serve their coffee at 60 degrees which suits me just fine but you can ask for it a little hotter if you prefer.

We couldn’t resist sampling their appetising range of panini’s and baguettes that are made fresh each morning. And they are obviously very popular as their cabinet was filled to the brim, even on a Monday morning.

What we tried…
Grilled eggplant, pumpkin and goats cheese.
Spicy chicken with pancetta and avocado.
Pesto, tomato and bocconcini.
Chicken Schnitzel, slaw and aioli.
Corned beef, sauerkraut, cheese and mustard mayo.

Their bread was very fresh and the baguettes had a nice chewiness to them. My favourites were the two vegetarian ones and the chicken schnitzel but it feels like you can’t go wrong as they were all good. The goats cheese in the pumpkin one was creamy and slightly tart. They used a really nice sweet pesto in the bocconcini one that was scattered with whole pine nuts. And the chicken schnitzel was crisp and offset by the fresh slaw and creamy mayo.

A great little find that is worth hunting out on your next trip down… and they have cute little colourful beach huts on the beach too!
